Critical thinking has no place in Texas public schools, and anybody who says (or even dares to think) otherwise is itching for a fight. Liberals are up in arms across the country this week because our Republican leaders have called for an end to teaching critical thinking skills. They want to keep thinking out of Texas classrooms and keep Jesus in (the two being incompatible). Their beautifully clear language comes from a position statement in the 2012 Texas Republican Party Platform:

"Knowledge-Based Education - We oppose the teaching of Higher Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) (values clarification), critical thinking skills and similar programs that are simply a relabeling of Outcome-Based Education (OBE) (mastery learning) which focus on behavior modification and have the purpose of challenging the student's fixed beliefs and undermining parental authority."

Now, like Jesus, Republicans are being crucified for speaking the truth. Witness this angry rant from alternet.org.

Book knowledge and the study of philosophy and logic and all other kinds of liberal flip-flopping doubletalk is just a sneaky means to lead people away from the only thing that can save them and save our society: Faith. You can't learn Faith in any book except the Bible. We aren't doing children or the proper American family a favor by teaching kids to think "smart." That only makes them  grow up and think they're better than their parents. And it teaches them to talk back to their parents. Look what happened when Kennedy's social engineers re-rigged the public school system in the 60s! The kids all turned on their parents, and the parents are still paying for the education! Would you hand some developing young person a gun, someone who's about to be filled with a lot of crazy ideas about logical conclusions and hypothetical constructs and the importance of epidemiological evidence and a lot of other crazy crap they teach youngsters to lead them away from the TRUTH, and say, "Ok, don't shoot me."? Maybe if you're a crazy liberal you would. If so, you're probably like that squirrel Alan Combes on Fox. I don't have any truck with libs myself, but you can get all the lib talk you can stand from Fox TV. Combes is such a perfect representative of his class. Is he even heterosexual, because honest to God you've got to wonder whenever you see him. He ain't right, ain't even close to right.

The heart of this thing is to be sure and teach Darwin's ideas of evolution as theory, not as fact, and I'm damned tired of so many so-called "learned" people telling me that any scientist of any decent standing in this world accepts evolution as a fact. There are no facts that can't be altered by a man armed with a Bible and real Faith. That's the real lesson, the only one that matters. I hope you'll join me on this and write your Texas Republican state reps and let them know they are doing a heckuva' job.
